Communicative language teaching,as a comparatively new teaching approach,is conducive to improving the communicative competence of English learners in China.The application of communicative language teaching comes across great opportunities as well as challenges,which include the teacher-related factors and student-related factors.
This essay aims to compare and contrast the Cooperative Principle(CP) and Politeness Principle(PP) under the context of English learning and teaching in China.Through both the advantages and the disadvantages of the two principles,the author attempts to reach the conclusion that CP and PP,two long-tested guiding principles can offer both students and teachers a new criterion against which the accuracy and appropriateness of cross-cultural communications can be measured.
As two main universal principles in conversation,Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle play important roles in communication and intercultural communication.While in language teaching and learning in China,the neglect of the principles is caused by various reasons and thus leads to communication disorder in intercultural communication.The issue should draw the attention of English teachers who can lead students into the acquisition of the two principles in language learning.
