case of hyper plastic arthritis of knee received the treatment of manipulations, herbal steaming and washing and hot compression as well. The shortest course of disease was 3 months and the longest one was 10 years. The manipulative steps were as follows: thumb kneading and pressing around the knee; finger nipping the knee eye point; palm kneading around the knee; then articulation kneading the patella and finally pulling and pushing the knee joint. The whole process was repeated 3 to 5 times. The treatment was given every 2 or 3 days with 20 times in one course. The herbal formula for steaming and washing was composed of around 15 herbs which were decocted together. A small amount of wine was added into the hot decoction to steam and wash the affected knee. Then the dregs of the decoction were put into a cloth made bag and an appropriate amount of wine and water were added into it. After heated the bag was topically compressed onto the affected knee. The treatment was given once or twice daily with 10 times in one course. The result showed that 60 cases were cured, 20 markedly improved, 32 only improved and 6 failed to respond to the treatment. The total effective rate reached 94.92%. The shortest time for treatment was one month while the longest one was three.
