The Old Man and the Sea is not only a classic work of Ernest Hemingway, but also an important part of the world’s literary treasures. Many well-known translators in China have translated it. And the study of translators and their translation process is also an important part of translation studies. This paper will make a bilingual analysis and appreciation of the translation characteristics embodied in Yu Guangzhong’s 2010 translation of The Old Man and the Sea. It also compares and analyzes the two translation versions, from Sun Zhili and Yu Guangzhong, and discusses in depth the issues involved in literary translation. This study aims to explore how different translators convey the aesthetic value and cultural connotations of the original work through language transformation, with the expectation of providing insights into the cultivation of new generations of translation talents and the enhancement of translation quality.
With the advancement of the “Belt and Road Initiative” and the “Study in China Program” in the 21st century, the number of international students coming to China has increased rapidly. Scholarship policies serve as an important means to attract and cultivate international students, with language requirements playing a fundamental role in ensuring the quality of education for these students. This study refers to the statistical data on international students coming to China from the Ministry of Education and selects Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Liaoning as the five popular regions for studying in China. Based on the three principles of the “Good Language Policy” proposed by Grin, it examines the language requirements for international students in the current scholarship policy documents of these five regions. The study finds that the language requirements lack effectiveness evaluation, cost-effectiveness consideration, and participatory democracy. The study proposes suggestions for improving the language requirements in the scholarship policies of each region, with the aim of achieving more efficient, economical, and democratic policy objectives.
