As both SFL (Systemic Functional Linguistics) and CL (Cognitive Linguistics) belong to the big family of functionalism, with the real and natural language as the target, the two linguistic schools focus their attention on meaning. They basically share four general concepts about meaning: integrity between form and meaning, iconicity between form and meaning, dynamics of meaning and indeterminacy of meaning. However, distinctive perspectives of two schools that SFL regards language as behavior while CL regards language as knowledge, determine the fact that similar concepts are generated and proved in different ways or with different ideas. Moreover, the main disparity in their study on meaning is reflected in the basic hypothesis of each school. Through a brief comparison, the paper reaches the conclusion that both schools have great future for mutual complementariness on their study of meaning.
